I am a Physical Oceanographer, and a Climate Scientist in the Computational Physics and Methods group (CCS-2) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). I am also an Affiliate Research Professor at the International Arctic Research Center (IARC) of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). My research interests span a wide range of topics, but generally concern the dynamics of the large-scale ocean circulation, and the ocean’s role in the climate system.
Bio
Student
I studied Geophysics at Utrecht University, and my passion for the oceans pushed me to study Physical Oceanography as well. I enjoyed the rigorous mathematical and physical underpinnings of both fields. I received MSc degrees in both disciplines, and ultimately a PhD (2000) in Physical Oceanography.
Postdoc
My professional career started as a postdoc in Henk Dijkstra‘s group at the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research Utrecht (IMAU; 1999-2002). With Henk I studied the stability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation using a fully-implicit model of the global ocean circulation.
In 2002 I moved to San Diego to work with Sarah Gille at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (2003-2005). Under her mentorship I studied the response of the Southern Ocean to atmospheric forcing. I also started studying topographically trapped barotropic modes, kindling my passion for the Argentine Basin.
Staff Scientist

In 2006 I became a staff scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and have been working as a computational Earth system scientist in the Computational Physics and Methods group (CCS-2). In particular, I am leading the Department of Energy’s HiLAT-RASM project, a multi-disciplinary project to study the causes and impacts of the rapid changes of the high latitude Earth systems. I am also co-leading the Consortium for the Advancement of Marine Arctic Science (CAMAS), an initiative to encourage and facilitate international collaborations on marine Arctic Science.
Since 2022, I have been an Affiliate Research Professor at the International Arctic Research Center (IARC) of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). In this role, I am collaborating directly with IARC scientists, and maintaining connections between our institutions.
